Will
Sutherland has a multi-disciplinary art practise that involves installation,
performance, construction and painting in combination and separately.
Sutherland
is interested in modern masculinity and aspects of male identity. He considers
these themes through the focus of maturation, relationships and physicality. He
repeatedly uses baby blue in his work on his wooden structures and objects of
boyhood like toys and faux ‘wood-shop’ projects.
Sutherland’s
painting style imitates that of a child. It borrows similar imagery, technique
and attitude in exploring issues of the mature world. Inspired by the role of
art in life in primitive societies Sutherland presents his paintings and
installations as ritual sites for contemporary masculinity.
The
performative is always a part of Sutherland’s work; in process and in public
performances. He often uses less conventional exhibition spaces and is keen to
discover spaces to present between theatre, visual art and ritual sites.
